If It's Yellow....

Flush it anyway.

We certainly had an interesting holiday weekend here. The sewer system serving the entire length of Commercial Street went kaput. I won't bore you with the details, you can find all that in the newspapers, but you should know that they are at times gory details. Gore and panic. I take my number two's outside on the lawn, though, so I barely felt the impact. Other than those trucks.

Starting midday Saturday, we noticed a lot of septic trucks pumping out the manholes in front of our place. They kept coming all night. The biped was fit to be tied, what with waking up with rumbling and scraping and the medieval clang of metal on metal. But we both soon realized that we'd rather deal with the noise than walk around ankle-deep in shit. And that's ankle-deep for the biped. It would have been nose-deep for me!

But as awful as it truly is--and all communication dysfunctions aside--I have to say that having those trucks run up and down the street at all hours of the night made us both feel that people in town government were paying attention and taking care of business. Yes, there were many people affected, but without the focus and tireless efforts of Sharon Lynn and her staff, this could have been far more catastrophic than it was.

The events played like a remake of JAWS, though. Can you imagine? While all the town officials were lining up to be in the big parade, there were rumblings and discharges coming from under the very street they were about to parade down. And crews were just beginning to realize the full extent of the mayhem. Happy Circuit Week!!!

But on to more important things. The town really dressed itself up for the holiday (and we were able to get a hot dog from Michael Cunningham just like he says in his book!)!

Here are some still shots of the fireworks. They were really beautiful--some people say the best they've ever seen here. The night was really perfect for it. We went down to the beach in front of the Provincetown Inn to watch. Some giant dog at Delft Haven kept barking the whole time! Doesn't he know they're just fireworks??

And while all the bipeds in town were running around pulling their fur out, I just took it easy and enjoyed the sunshine that has finally arrived!

I am a California native transplanted to the East Coast and have grown to accept both the snowy weather of winter and the hard-bitten attitudes of New Englanders. Since I moved here in October of 2006, I think I've become something of a native, although the locals will always call me a "bark-ashore". If you have any questions, just ask!
