Alabama Slammer

The biped and I had two great days in Huntsville. The biped was born here--and so was Tallulah Bankhead. The biped stopped here to do some "research" and he spent a lot of time in the library. We also did some walking around. Huntsville has a big district of antebellum homes and is the inspiration for the fictitious town, Albion, in the book the biped is working on.

This is where Tallulah was born.

This is the Church of the Nativity (Episcopal), completed in 1859.

Homes in the neighborhood...

These homes inspired the house he imagines for his heroine.

We also had a great time at the Weeden House Museum--a beautifully restored antebellum house and where the Huntsville artist and poet Maria Howard Weeden (1846-1905) lived. Weeden did beautiful watercolors of flowers and the people in her neighborhood, including sensitive portraits of the freed slaves in town. She also wrote several books of nostalgic and humorous poetry.

The biped used to volunteer in the garden here when he was 15. This visit, we both had the great pleasure to meet the Museum's director, Barbara. We sat in the parlor for over an hour having a nice, long Alabama-style visit. It made the trip. Hi, Barbara! We'll pay a call on our next visit through!

Who?

My photo
Provincetown, Massachusetts, United States
I am a California native transplanted to the East Coast and have grown to accept both the snowy weather of winter and the hard-bitten attitudes of New Englanders. Since I moved here in October of 2006, I think I've become something of a native, although the locals will always call me a "bark-ashore". If you have any questions, just ask!
